Moulins are deep, vertical holes in glaciers that form when surface meltwater drains through cracks in the ice. The water can travel all the way to the glacier’s base where it acts like a lubricant, reducing friction. This has a detrimental impact as it causes the glacier to flow more quickly, leading to accelerated ice loss and contributing to rising sea levels.
When trickle becomes torrent - the unravelling of equilibrium.
