I have always had a deep affinity for mountain environments and my enthusiasm for those wild, often frozen landscapes now lies at the heart of my work. Together with ephemeral skies and the dramatic light which emanates from them, this incredible scenery provides endless artistic challenge and inspiration. There was never a particular moment when I decided to become a ‘mountain painter,’ however, as my work continues to develop in that direction, it has become an increasingly more captivating – even addictive - subject for me.  I enjoy painting many types of landscape, from coastline and sea to moorland and wooded riverbank. However, the very essence of my work lies in my love and fascination for snow, rock and ice. And where mountains are concerned, the more jagged and angular the better.

My passion is for painting in a representational way while at the same time seeking out and emphasising the natural rhythms and patterns that these forms create. I greatly enjoy every opportunity to be out there in my chosen environment, keenly observing my subject matter and gaining greater understanding of it as the figurative nature of my painting requires.

My pictures celebrate the timelessness of the landscape, often unaltered for thousands of years, and the fleeting changes upon it caused by interactions between sunshine, cloud and the changing seasons. Through these paintings I aim to highlight not only the raw beauty of some of Europe's most incredible environments, but also the huge importance of their conservation.

At work Alpine style!

Ongoing Work ~ Polar Ice

Back from another stunning visit to Antarctica, working with m/v Plancius this time, I am enjoying some quality time in the studio!

An amazing day for painting at Half Moon Island, South Shetlands and, amongst Penguins at Cuverville Island, Antarctic Peninsula

Fabulous South Georgia will now feature alongside the South Shetlands, South Orkney's and Antarctic Peninsula in forthcoming work.

study on canvas: Morning Sun on Nordenskjold Peak, St. Andrew's Bay, South Georgia

I am extremely lucky to have spent five weeks as artist in residence on board HMS Scott in Antarctica.

This unique opportunity was awarded to me by the Friends of Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) and the Royal Navy after a selection process. It has proved to be an incredible, challenging experience and one which I enormously enjoyed.

With Grant support from the Andrew Croft Memorial Fund and the Gino Watkins Memorial Fund/ Edward Wilson Fund, I visited Greenland in June 2009 to paint the stunning Ilulissat Icefjord and surrounding area. It was a breathtaking experience! Read more.
